NILPHAMARI, Nov 2: Cultivation of indigo, the dye plant has started again after more than a century when farmers were forced to cultivate it during the colonial rule of East India Company.
Commercial cultivation of the plant has also already started in Paglapir Union of Rangpur Sadar Upazila, Rangpur district, and Jaldhaka and Kishoreganj upazilas in Nilphamari district. NGOs like CARE, NCVI and MCC initiated the cultivation of indigo and presently about a thousand farmers are engaged in it.
Sources said that not only is indigo used for dyeing fabrics, its cultivation also increases the fertility of the soil. Sources added that as natural dye it has huge potential for export at a time when demand for artificial dye is decreasing all over the world.
