Cultivation of large-size garlic

Saturday, 17 January 2015

Bangladesh has been importing a sizable quantity of garlic from outside to meet its domestic demand for the last few decades. The volume of locally produced garlic is very small. In a television programme it was shown that in Ohio State of the USA, a carnival is organized every year where different varieties of garlic are displayed. The biggest garlic shown in the programme weighed more than 300 grams. In Bangladesh, large-size garlic is usually imported from China.
The soil of Bangladesh is generally very fertile. Almost all types of plants can grow here. Once it was thought that teak plant would not grow in Bangladesh, which was ultimately proved wrong. Guavas of Thailand grow well here. NARICA paddy of Africa also grows very well in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) can import large-size garlic seeds from the USA and China as it imports potato seeds from the Netherlands, and sell those to the garlic growers of every district. Bangladesh is self-sufficient in potato production but also exports its surplus production.
We hope that Bangladesh will be able to grow large-size garlic in the same manner shortly and thus save valuable foreign currency. Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation and Department of Agriculture Extension can undertake a joint venture project in this area, which I believe, will be able to yield desired results.
