Cultivation of popular rice varieties starts in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Sept 30: With the recession of flood waters, the farmers have started cultivation of local variety T-Aman Ganzia and Nazirshal paddy on the char land including low lying areas of the district during the current season to get.
Official sources said the Department of Agriculture extension (DAE) has set a target to bring a total of 9545 hectares of land under this cultivation programmer this year in addition to 1, 22,950 hectares of land fixed by the department for T-Aman cultivation.
Of them, some 1267 hectares of land would be brought under this programmer in Sundarganj Upazila, 2200 hectares in Sadar Upazila, 3548 hectares of land in Fulchhari Upazila and 1500 hectares in Saghata Upazila, 1000 hectares in Gobindaganj Upazila and 30 hectares of land in Palashbari Upazila of the district, sources said.
Aslam Miah, a farmer of Khamarchar under Kamarjani Union of Sadar Upazia said he took a plan to cultivate the Ganzia paddy on 5 bighas of land this season with the hopes of getting at least 50 maunds (2 tonnes) of paddy from it like in the previous years.
Now, the farmers of the Teesta and the Brahmaputra river basins are busy transplanting the seedlings of the varieties on their char land, he also said.
Plant protection specialist of DAE M. Mozaffar Rahman said the farmers, particularly of the river basins of the district, are showing keen interest in cultivating the varieties on the char land and as its output is very satisfactory.
The rice of this variety is more popular amount all as it is very tasty to eat and vitamin enriched, he also said.
To make the cultivation programme a grand success, the government is also distributing the seedlings of the Nazirshail variety produced on the land of Agriculture Training Institute of the town here at the initiative of the DAE to the farmers free of cost, said an official.
