Our Correspondent
CHITTAGONG, Aug 1: Due to corrupt practices by the middlemen, the cultivators engaged in producing different vegetable items are not getting fair prices of their products on the one hand and ultimately the consumers are being compelled to buy the desired vegetables at exorbitant prices on the other.
On arrival in the city markets through changing hands three to four times beginning from the places of production, prices of the vegetable items rise upto Tk 8 to Tk 10 per kg on an average, sources said.
Moreover, some syndicates are involved in price spiral of the vegetables and as such , vegetable market always remains unstable.
This is not only depriving the producers from getting justified prices but also adversely affecting the normal price level in the markets and the buyers are becoming the worst victims.
In such a situation prices of some vegetables increased almost double.
Major portion of the rainy vegetables in the port city comes from Dohazari , Sitakunda, Hathazari and Mirsarai upazilas.
During visit to some markets of the port city Wednesday, this correspondent witnessed that cucumber was being sold at Taka 24 to 28 per kg, while the cultivators of Dohazari are reported to earn Taka 12 to 15 only against the same vegetable item. Cultivators are getting Taka 12 to 15 only by selling each kg of ladies finger. But on arrival of the said item in the city market, its price rises to Tk 24 to 28.
Similar is the case with other vegetable items like potato, long bean, patal, kakrol, karala etc. price of each item is increased three to four times while reaching the consumers from the place of production.
