A total of six persons were killed in separate road accidents in Cumilla, Chattogram and Bogura districts on Saturday, reports UNB.
In Cumilla, three people were killed when a speeding tractor veered off the road, overturned and fell into a ditch in Cumilla's Muradnagar upazila on Saturday morning, police said.
The deceased were identified as Babul Mia, 22, Md Hasan, 23, and Md Tutul, 22. They were all residents of the Ballabbaria area of the upazila. One of them was the driver of the vehicle and the other two were helpers.
According to police and locals, the accident occurred around 5.30am in the Mochagara area of the upazila.
The tractor carrying soil for a brick kiln was travelling towards the Roachala area from Bakharnagar when its driver lost control of the vehicle in Mochagara. It veered off the road and overturned before falling into a roadside ditch.
The victims came under the tractor and died on the spot, said Muradnagar police station OC Abul Hashem. "Arrangements are being made to hand the bodies over to the bereaved families," he added.
In Chattogram, a 38-year-old man and his five-year-old son were killed while three others sustained injuries when a lorry hit a cycle rickshaw carrying them to a shopping plaza in the port city on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Abu Saleh and his son Abdul Momin of the Bandartila area of Chattogram's Patenga. The three injured -- Saleh's wife, their second child and the rickshaw puller, have been hospitalised.
Nurul Huda, officer-in-charge of Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) police station, said the accident occurred around 11am near Bandartila Shah Plaza Market.
"The lorry hit the rickshaw carrying Saleh, his wife and their two children to Bay Shopping Centre inside CEPZ from the Patenga Steel Mill area, leaving the two dead on the spot," he said.
Following the accident, locals vandalised the lorry, triggering a major traffic snarl in the area. The locals dispersed after being pacified by cops.
In Bogura, a 68-year-old lawyer died after a speeding truck rammed his bike outside a petrol pump in Bagura's Kahalu upazila on Saturday morning.
The deceased was identified as Mahbubar Rahman Faruq, a senior advocate at Bagura court and a former vice president of Bogura Bar Association.
Rubel Rana, warehouse inspector of Kahalu fire station, said that the accident occurred around 8am as soon as Mahbubar hit the main road after refuelling at Rahima filling station on Bogura Santahar Road.
"The speeding truck hit his bike from behind, leaving him dead on the spot in the impact," the officer said.
The body was recovered from the spot and handed over to the family by police.
The driver and helper managed to escape, leaving the truck behind.
