Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh on Wednesday said that checking corruption, strict enforcement of law and ensuring speedy trial are the three key components to build a livable and safer city.
If these three elements are ensured, the other components essential to build a livable and safer city will be added automatically, he added.
He said that DSCC under his leadership has been trying to check corruption and as part of this move he has sacked at least 38 corrupt officials so far since his takeover.
The DSCC mayor further said, "The huge flow of people towards Dhaka should be stopped. Otherwise, whatever plan you take for the city will not be fruitful."
He said these while addressing a programme organised by 'Urban Development Journalist Forum Bangladesh (UDJFB)' at the CIRDAP auditorium in the city.
The UDJFB organised the programme titled 'Discussion Meeting and Best Urban Reporting Award 2024' on occasion of 'Safe Urban Day'.
Former president of Jatiya Press Club and also Editor of Daily Jugantor Saiful Alam attended the programme as a special guest.
Shaikh Muhammad Mehedi Ahsan, general secretary of Bangladesh Institute of Planners, presented a keynote paper at the programme while UDJFB president Matin Abdullah presided over it.
Md Ashraful Islam, chief urban planner of Rajuk, Prof Dr Ahmad Kamruzzaman Majumder, founder and director, Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS), Sujaul Islam Khan, urbanisation and environment affairs secretary of the Institute of Architects Bangladesh, among others, also attended the programme.
During the discussion on the keynote paper titled 'Safer City: Re-imaging safer city in Bangladesh', planner Mehedi Ahsan said, "We need an integrated urban plan for the entire country."
"At the same time we need separate regional urban plans as Barind, Haor and coastal areas have different biodiversities," he added.
If the overall problems of the cities are not brought under the one stop service, the problems will not be solved, he further said.
At the programme, six reporters were given 'Best Urban Reporting Award 2024' in five categories.
The reporters are-- Rashad Ahmad of New Age, Md Al Fatah Mamun of Dailty Bonik Barta, Amitosh Paul and Latiful Isalm of Daily Samakal, Rajnin Fazana of Sarabangla and Md Nazmul Sayed of Independent TV.
