Customs earning exceeds target in Sylhet region

SYLHET, Aug 13: Revenue earning in Customs duty and VAT exceeded target in Sylhet region during the 2014-2015 fiscal.
The total amount stood at Tk 7370 million against a target of Tk 7090 million, informed the Commissioner of Customs, Excise & VAT, Sylhet Dr. Md. Nuruzzaman Wednesday.
Of the total, Tk 5710 million in VAT was earned against the target of Tk 5700 million. In the previous year it was Tk 5450 million.
On the other hand, Tk 1663 million was earned as Customs duty against the target of Tk 1390 million in the fiscal 2014-2015, while in the previous year it was Tk 2370 million.
However, some of 6 Land Custom stations failed to achieve their target for revenue earning while 5 others exceeded their targets.
The 6 are, Tamabil, Isamoti, Jakiganj Sylhet district and Juri and Chatlapore in Moulvibazar and Chela in Sunamganj district.
Due to suspension of the import of coal from Meghalaya through the Tamabil and other LC station for over 7 months, the earning fell drastically and the target could not be acheieved there, said an official.
It remained suspended for over 7 months due to restriction over mining in the Indian state of Meghalaya.
