CWASA projects to mitigate water crisis

Sunday, 18 July 2010

CHITTAGONG, July 17 (BSS): The Chittagong Water and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) is going to implement four mega projects at a cost of Tk 38.12 billion to mitigate water crisis in the port city for the next 50 years, which remained shelved for the last eight years.
The CWASA will formally launch the implementation process of the projects by this month (July) targeting to meet the demand of water for the next five decades in view of rapid urbanisation and industrialisation.
Of the total outlay, Tk 12 billion will be financed by the World Bank (WB), Tk 9.62 billion by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Tk 10.50 billion by Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) while the rest Tk 6.0 billion will be available from the government fund, CWASA sources said.
Currently, the CWASA produces 220 million litres (ML) of water per day against the daily demand of 550 ML which is too inadequate to meet the growing demands of nearly 4.8 million city dwellers for household, commercial and industrial purposes, a top official of CWASA told the news agency.
CWASA Chairman Engineer AKM Fazlullah said the per day water production capacity of CWASA will go up to 665 MLs per day which will be three times higher than the existing production capacity after successful implementation of the four projects.
The four projects are Tk 9.62 billion "Karnaphuli Water Supply and Sanitation Project (KWSSP)" with a production capacity of 135 ML water per day, Tk 12 billion "Madunaghat Water Treatment Plant (MAWTP)" with a capacity of 90 ML per day, Tk 6 billion "Mohra Water Treatment Plant (MWTP) (2nd Phase)" with a generation capacity of 90 ML per day and Tk 10.50 billion "Bhandaljury Water Treatment Plant (BWTP)" with a capacity of 112 ML water per day with the financial assistance of the KOICA.
The CWASA chairman said the main physical work of the water reservoir of KWSSP started last month after land acquisition and earth filling at a cost of Tk 140 million.
He said the international tender process for constructing water treatment plant and constructing pipeline of KWSSP is expected to be completed within this month.
The WASA chairman expressed the hope that the authority would be able to start the physical work of the three projects - KWSSP, MWTP and MAWTP - within December next and expected to be complete within the stipulated time.
He said the authority is able to remove many obstructions which had been stalling for long eight years due to bureaucratic red tapism, legal disputes and difference of opinions between the government and donor countries.
Fazlullah also said the overall capacity and productivity of the CWASA in all terms would definitely increase considerably within four years as CWASA won the legal battle on MWTP in June last and completed tender process of KWSSP and WB in its board meeting approved money for the MAWTP on June 23 last.
