Cyclone inflicts losses worth over Tk 12.27b in Pirojpur

PIROJPUR, Nov 26 (UNB): The cyclone `Sidr' that hit the country's south and southwestern region on November 15 inflicted a loss of over Tk 12.27 billion in the district in different sectors, according to the reports of the district Relief and Rehabilitation Department.
As per the report, the cyclone damaged huge forest resources causing a loss of Tk 9.01 billion.
Besides, crops worth Tk 1.70 billion on 32,000 hectares in seven upazilas of the district were totally damaged while 30,000 hectares partially, inflicting a loss of Tk 1.12 billion.
Power sector has incurred a loss of Tk 145.8 million, livestock sector Tk 78.8 million while telecommunication network Tk 16.4 million in the district.
The cyclone washed away shrimp worth Tk 69.3 million and also damaged fishing nets worth Tk 57.6 million. Fisheries sector incurred a loss of about Tk 50 million, industries sector Tk 14.6 million while poultry farms Tk 86.6 million, the reports said.
About 63,896 houses were damaged totally while 80,315 partially and some 260 educational institutions were also damaged in the district.
It may be mentioned that the cyclone killed 382 people in the district while 520 people remained missing until Sunday night.
