Cyclone Midhili wrecks havoc in Cox's Bazar

Six people die, crops extensively damaged

COX'S BAZAR, Nov 18: Cyclonic storm Midhili left six people dead and caused extensive damage to crops in Cox's Bazar district on Friday.
The deadly storm left a trail of devastation uprooting a large number of trees, sinking boats and burying walls of houses.
Cox's Bazar received moderate to heavy rainfall for 48 hours before the cyclone hit the coastal area of the district on Friday afternoon.
Four members of the same family were killed when wall of a house collapsed in Hnila of Teknaf under the impact of rain.
The deceased were identified as Anwara Begum (50), wife of Fakir Ahmed, their son Saidul Mostafa (20) and daughters Nilufar Begum (18) and Sadia Begum (11)- all residents of Morichyaghona area of Moulvibazar under Hnila union of Teknaf.
Besides, two other people identified as Saeed Mahmud and Amir Hossain Kamal were killed.
Sayeed of Maheshkhali died as an uprooted a tree fell on him at his house in Kalamarchhara union while Amir Hossain drowned has his boat sank in the river in Chaufaldandi area.
Sources said a tree was uprooted by cyclone Midhili in Saeed's house on Friday afternoon, leaving him severely injured. Later he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where he died on Saturday morning while undergoing treatment.
Amir Hossain Kamal went missing as his boat sank when he was returning from the sea in Chauphaldandi area of Sadar Upazila in the evening. Later his body was recovered on Saturday morning.
Cox's Bazar district administration disclosed the above information on Saturday.
Cyclone Midhili took a heavy toll on agricultural crops over vast areas of land in Cox's Bazar.
Mohammad Kabir Hossain, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Cox's Bazar, said betel nut on 20 hectares of land, Aman paddy on 145 hectares of land, winter vegetables on 180 hectares of and mustard fields on 11 hectares of land were damaged in Maheshkhali under the the impact of cyclone Midhili.
Meanwhile, tourist ships resumed operation on Saint Martin's waterway from Saturday.
At around 10am, a ship called Carey Sindabad left Teknaf.
Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mohammad Adnan Chowdhury said the tourists who remained stranded on Saint Martin's Island for two days will be brought to Teknaf by a ship.
Due to low pressure in the sea and then the formation of cyclone, movement of ships on St. Martin's waterway remained stopped for the last two days.
Meanwhile, Coast Guard rescued two fishing trawlers with 32 sailors on board after their engines broke down in the deep sea due to stormy wind on Friday.
