CHATTOGRAM, May 13: Operational activities at Chittagong port, the major seaport of the country, have been suspended since Saturday morning due to the cyclone Mocha, which is likely to make a landfall on Sunday.
The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has been on high alert due to the cyclone, as the Bay of Bengal has become very rough and choppy since the early hours of Saturday. Meanwhile, trawlers and fishing boats have already returned to shore in light of the safety concerns.
The CPA stopped all operational activities since 4:00am of Saturday. No ships from the outer anchorage entered or left the jetty, and loading and unloading of cargoes and containers remained halted since the morning. Following the direction of the port authority, the captains took their ships to the outer anchorage, leaving the jetties of the port.
Meanwhile, Maritime port of Cox's Bazar has been advised to hoist Danger Signal No. 10.
Nobi Alom, General Secretary of Lighter Workers Union, said, "All fishing boats and trawlers returned from the deep sea on Saturday."
Secretary of CPA Omar Faruk said, "We have suspended all activities at the Chittagong port since 4:00am Saturday due to the cyclone until the weather situation becomes normal. We asked everyone at the port to stay alert over the natural disaster."
"CPA has taken several measures to protect the equipment of the port. The authority has already shifted several pieces of equipment, ships, and boats to safer places. We have opened four control rooms as a part of our preparations to face the cyclone," he added.
