Cyclonic storm 'Hamoon' stalks Ctg division

A deep depression over the west central bay and adjoining area moved slightly north-northeastwards while intensifying into a cyclonic storm namely 'Hamoon' on Monday evening.
The system was moving toward Bangladesh coast with a speed of 6.0-10 kilometers per hours (kphs), said Dr Sadequl Alam, meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
It might move nearly north-northeastwards and cross the Bangladesh coast between Khepupara and Chattogram around early hours of Wednesday as a deep depression, he said.
He said Chattogram and other few coastal districts might witness heavy rain and wind as well as tidal surge in next couple of days.
It might move north-northeastwards and intensify further, according to BMD.
Meanwhile, the depression started impacting different places of the country including the capital.
Dhaka witnessed a severe rainfall of 59 mm just in two hours on Monday afternoon, said BMD.
Rayerbazar, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, Farmgate, Green Road, parts of Mirpur and older parts of the city witnessed waterlogging coupled with a severe traffic congestion on Monday.
According to a Monday evening bulletin of BMD, under the influence of the system, deep convection was taking place over the north bay.
Stormy weather might affect the maritime ports, north bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh due to the possible cyclonic effect.
"The maximum sustained wind speed within 48 kilometers of the deep depression centre was about 50 kph which was rising to 60 kph in gusts or squalls. The sea will remain rough near the deep depression centre," said the bulletin.
Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra were advised to hoist the local cautionary signal no. three.
All fishing boats and trawlers over the north bay and deep sea were advised to anchor safely so that they could take shelter on a very short notice. They were also advised not to venture into the deep sea.
Moderate thundershowers accompanied by gusty wind might occur at most places of Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions and at many places of Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at a few places of Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions in next twenty four hours commencing from Monday evening.
Heavy to very heavy falls might also occur at places of the southern part of the country on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the possible cyclone.
Insiders said the possible cyclone-induced heavy rain and wind might cause damage to vast Aman crop lands.
Winter vegetable fields, fish farms, dairy farms might also be affected amid a tidal surge, they feared.
