Commmonwealth Enterprise & Investment Council (CWEIC) has invited Bangladesh to be a Country Strategic Partner of the London-based entity.
" We have had positive indication from the Bangladesh Government about becoming one of our Country Strategic Partners but are waiting for an official reply. We hope to see HE Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed at the Commonwealth Business Forum scheduled to be held alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta this November," Oliver Everett, Chief Executive Officer of Commonwealth Enterprise & Investment Council told The FE in an email query.
"We also hope it will serve to reinforce the ongoing relationship between the CWEIC and Bangladesh's growing private sector, which we can help further strengthen by providing business and investment opportunities through our global network," Mr Oliver Everett said.
According to the CWEIC proposal, the London-based company sought 30,000 pound as annual funding from the GoB (Government of Bangladesh).
"CWEIC wishes to grow its membership amongst the business community in Bangladesh and develop a programme of work focused on Bangladesh's commercial links with the Commonwealth to ensure it provides maximum value to the GoB and the private sector," the proposal said.
Mr Oliver Everett said a strong delegation of Bangladesh business leaders are expected to join the Commonwealth Business Forum, led by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The Forum will bring together Heads of Government, Ministers, and more than one thousand senior business leaders from around the world.
It will provide a valuable opportunity for high level dialogue on trade and investment between Bangladesh business leaders and other business and government leaders from the Commonwealth and beyond.
The CWEIC was established with the support of the Commonwealth Secretariat in July, 2014 following the liquidation of the Commonwealth Business Council.
The main purpose of the company is to serve the Commonwealth by promoting trade and investment and supporting private sector enterprises.
CWEIC is the apex organisation representing private sector businesses within the Commonwealth and is the lone institution with a remit to promote intra-Commonwealth trade and investment.
According to Standard Chartered Global Research (July-2014), growth in emerging markets and 'south-south trade' has subsequently increased intra-Commonwealth trade to 2.3 per cent of global trade in goods worth $ 420 billion.
With a combined population in excess of 2.3 billion, GDP of more than $ 10 trillion and an estimated average annual growth of 7.3 per cent for Commonwealth countries over the next five years, intra-Commonwealth trade and investment has the potential to grow significantly in future.
