Pro-BNP Doctors' Association of Bangladesh (DAB) leader AZM Zahid Hossain was sentenced to 13 years in jail Sunday for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information about his wealth to the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC).

A special court, set up on the Parliament Bhaban premises for trying high-profile corruption suspects, gave the verdict, also sentencing his wife Rifat Hossain to three years imprisonment for aiding her husband in protecting the ill-gotten property, reports UNB.

Passing the order against the fugitive couple, the court also fined Mr Zahid Tk 1.0 million and his wife Tk 50,000. In default, they will have to suffer one year and one month more respectively behind bars.

In a further punitive action against them for running away from justice, the court ordered confiscation of Mr Zahid's property worth over Tk 30 million.
