The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) differ over the actual yield of Boro crop this season, sources said.

There has been a gap of 2.0 million tonnes between the calculations of the latest Boro production made by the two state agencies, creating confusions among the authorities concerned, they mentioned.

According to a provisional figure of the BBS, the official data provider, the country harvested 17 million tonnes of rice in the just concluded Boro season.

On the other hand, the DAE has calculated the Boro rice output at 19 million tonnes.

The domestic Boro production, according to the BBS figure, is 0.5 million tonnes below the official production target of 17.5 million tonnes.

On contrary, the DAE's calculation reveals that the domestic rice output in the Boro cropping has surpassed the production target by 1.5 million tonnes.

"The DAE has already sent its revised reports on the country's latest Boro o plantation this season against the initial target of 4.5 million hectares.

Apart from the increase in the cropping land, the farmers' extra efforts coupled with enhanced supports from the government helped the country achieve a bomber Boro output, a DAE official observed.

Sources, on the other hand, said whatever the figure is suggested by the DAE, the BBS's statistics get the final official recognition.

According to the BBS, it normally calculates the figures on agricultural outputs, taking its upazila and regional-level data.

But, the figures that the agriculture department shows for the area of cultivable land and crop output often vary with those of BBS, sources observed.
