MANIKGANJ, July 25 (BSS): Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken up a programme to cultivate dhaincha in the district aimed at producing green manure for saving chemical fertiliser and firewood for cooking in rural areas.
DAE office sources said a total of 1,010 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation this year. The seeds have been sown on the fallow land mainly by riversides in the district.
Of the total land 276 hectares have been cultivated for green manure and the rest for firewood.
Deputy Director of DAE Alimuzzaman Mia said cultivation of dhaincha is gaining popularity in the district day by day for its multipurpose usage.
Dhaincha also prevents river erosion. That's why the people of char areas cultivate it by the side of the rivers or canals to protect their land. The stalk of dhaincha is also used as fencing and making platform in the vegetable fields.
