DAE programme to popularise ribbon retting method

Tuesday, 20 July 2010

GAIBANDHA, July 19 (BSS): A programme has been taken to popularise the Ribbon retting method to the farmers to separate ribbon from the jute sticks and to rot those in the holes properly without water bodies.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is implementing it in all the seven upazilas of the district and the technology will be familiarised to a large number of jute growers of the district in phases through providing them with need-based training, equipment, financial help and technological support from the department.
Under this method, the raw ribbon will be separated from the sticks through an equipment: ribboners. Then, the separated ribbon will be kept under the water of polythene scattered big hole until rotting those properly, an official of DAE said.
In this process, there is no necessity of water body like pond, canal, and ditch and seasonal rain to rot the ribbon and to separate it from the sticks. Some water and a little urea fertiliser are used in the hole to rot the ribbon quickly, the sources said.
In many of the places of the country the jute cultivators face difficulties for rotting their harvested jute sticks for want of sufficient water in the water bodies. This new method can help them get desired fibre of jute.
