DAE undertakes programme to produce winter crops in N-region

SIRAJGANJ, Oct 21: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has undertaken a massive programme to produce a record amount of winter crops in the country's Northern region this year, DAE sources said.
Under the programme, a target has been fixed to produce 10,883,316 tonnes of different varieties of Rabi crops from a total of 2,595,051 hectares of land in Rajshahi division during the current season. According to the sources, the concerned government, semi-government, autonomous and other agricultural departments are jointly providing the farmers with adequate agri-loans, seeds, fertilisers and other inputs free of cost to make the drive a success. Farmers in the region have already started cultivation of most of the Rabi crops from the last month.
In addition to main varieties of Rabi crops, other crops will also be grown on more lands simultaneously in the region, sources added.
A total of 1,369,166 hectares of land have been brought under 'boro' cultivation programme in 16 Northern districts during the current season, sources said.
At the same time 819,000 tonnes of wheat from 364,000 hectares of land, 2,956,250 tonnes of potato from 236,500 hectares, 1,010,000 tonnes of vegetables from 101,000 hectares, 371,500 tonnes of maize from 30,500 hectares, 137,700 tonnes of sweet potato from 13,500 hectares, 165,160 tonnes of mustard seeds from 165,160 hectares, 295,175 tonnes of onion from 59,035 hectares, 126,247 tonnes of garlic from 28,055 hectares, 55,300 tonnes of ginger from 5,530 hectares, 55,350 tonnes of turmeric from 6,150 hectares, and 166,122 tonnes of' pulses are expected to be produced from 169,345 hectares of land in the country's northern districts.
