Dairy farmers demand duty protection

Saturday, 19 June 2010

FE Report
Dairy farmers urged the government to impose 20 per cent import duty and 10 per cent regulatory duty on import of powdered milk in the proposed budget for 2010-2011 in a bid to salvage the local industry.
The farmers have also demanded withdrawal of value added tax (VAT) on locally produced powdered milk and sought an incentive package for local dairy industry.
Greater Pabna Zilla Small Dairy Farm Owner's Samity made the demands Thursday, said a statement.
The dairy farmers will have to incur a loss of Tk 5.0 to Tk 7.0 by selling a litre of milk, as the government has kept the duty rate same, said A B M Nurunnobi Saimum, secretary of the association.
The association also said the government should immediate withdraw tax from locally produced milk powder as the one-forth of the country's total population depend on the sector to earn living.
