Dal-Bhat programme fails to meet demands due to supply disruption

Sunday, 16 September 2007

The Operation Dal-Bhat programme of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), launched to help contain the soaring prices, has so far failed to meet the consumers' demands due to disruption in its supply chain, reports UNB.
Visits by a number of UNB correspondents to the "Fair Price Outlets" and other traditional kitchen markets and shops in the city revealed that the price of soybean oil has apparently stabilised but onion has become pricier just before the Ramadan. It was found that BDR could not maintain the smooth supply of some other items.
"Yes, there is some supply disruption in case of onion. Our importers said the supply would become normal within a couple of days," Col Mojibul Hoque, BDR Operation Commandar of Dal-Bhat programme, told the news agency Saturday.
Soybean is more or less available at the BDR outlets at the listed price. However, a few of the shops were seen rationing the edible oil. About other items, Col Mojib said they have enough stock of other items, but the problem they are now facing is lack of transport to ensure smooth supply at all the 100 fair price shops across the city.
