Dam collapsed in Sirajganj worsening flood situation
SIRAJGANJ, July 26 (UNB): Khokshabari ring dam under Sadar Uapzila collapsed early Thursday worsening the overall flood situation in the district.
Most of the areas in Belkuchi, Shahajadpur, Kazipur and Sadar uapzilas went under water caused by heavy rain and on rush of hilly waters from across the border.
Sources said the Jamuna River was flowing 30 centimetre above the danger level this morning.
Meanwhile, floodwater is entering at Polashpur, Meghai, Dhekuria and Shubhogaccha areas in Kazipur Upazila through the damaged portion of the flood protection embankment.
Another report from Comilla adds: Water Development Board (WDB) has identified 28 risky points on the 140 kilometre dam on both banks of the Gomoti River amid rise of water-level in the river due to the incessant downpour.
WDB sources said the river was flowing above the danger level Thursday morning threatening the existence of the dam.
