Data collection for voter registration begins in Rangpur

Door to door delivery of relevant forms to collect data for the registration of voters began in Rangpur municipal area Tuesday, repots BSS.
Distribution of registration forms to each household in the district town will continue until September 13 to prepare a fresh voters' list with photographs and national identity cards.
Photographs and fingerprints of the voters will be taken from August 19 to September 13, and the national identity cards are expected to be delivered to the voters from September 28 to 30, officials said.
A total of 86 centres have been set up in 15 wards of the pourashabha to prepare the ID cards of voters in the town for which 15 assistant registration officers have been appointed to oversee data collection by 566 trained information collectors under the supervision of 123 supervisors.
On completion of the primary work, the technical units of the Armed Forces will begin preparing the database, taking photographs and fingerprints of the voters from August 19, officials said.
General Officer Comman-ding (GOC) of Rangpur Syed Fatemi Ahmed Rumi is expected to inaugurate the final stage of photographing the voters at Rangpur Teachers' Training College on August 19, District Election Officer (DEO) Subhash Chandra Sarker said.
The registration of voters and preparation for national identity cards (IDs) is being done under a nationwide pilot project for holding the general elections by December 2008, officials said.
The Armed Forces has set up the central database centre at Rangpur Sadar Upazila parishad premises, and it is equipped with adequate number of computers and other necessary facilities to complete the project on schedule, said officials.
Commanding Officer of 5-Signals Battalion of Rangpur Cantonment Shahriar Ahmed Chow-dhury is leading the trained Armed Forces teams to provide the required technical support to the civil administration.
