Dawid Malan, Kusal Mendis' records in Tuesday's World Cup matches
Wednesday, 11 October 2023
England's Dawid Malan became the fastest player to score six One Day International (ODI) centuries. The 36-year-old cricketer etched his name into cricket history with a breathtaking performance against Bangladesh at the HCPA Stadium in Dharamshala, India, on Tuesday.
In another match, Kusal Mendis hit the fastest century by a Sri Lanka batter in men's ODI World Cup on Tuesday against Pakistan at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, report agencies.
Mendis reached his hundred in 65 balls with the help of 13 fours and four sixes.
Mendis' 65-ball century is also the sixth fastest century in men's ODI World Cup history; first being the 49-ball hundred by South Africa's Aiden Markram against Sri Lanka in 2023 in Delhi.
He also became the only Sri Lankan batter to hit a century against Pakistan in ODI World Cups. The previous best by a Sri Lankan batter was 89 by Roshan Mahanama in Hyderabad in the 1987 World Cup.
However, Mendis took down Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Nawaz in the powerplay and then scored his fifty in 40 balls. He unleashed his beast after crossing half-ton and scored the next 50 runs in just 25 balls. Mendis got out on 122 when Imam-ul-Haq took a brilliant catch at the mid-wicket fence.
The right-handed batter has become the fastest centurion for Sri Lanka in ODI World Cup history as he shattered Kumar Sangakkara's 70-ball hundred record which the former skipper scored in 2015 against England.
Mendis scored his 100th run with a six off Hasan Ali on his 65th ball.
Reacting to Kusal Mendis' century, Kumar Sangakkara took X (formerly twitter) to post a message for the batsman. Kumar Sangakkara posted "@KusalMendis13 was always a special player and seems to be coming into his own. What a hundred. His recent experiences in both international and franchise cricket is showing to be a huge positive. Consistent selection and clarify of style of play also helps hugely."
Kusal Mendis was dismissed on 122 runs. Mendis has been in good touch in the ongoing World Cup, scoring a rapid 42-ball 76 in Sri Lanka's opening match against South Africa at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, Malan achieved this remarkable milestone in just 23 innings, surpassing Pakistan's Imam-ul-Haq, who accomplished the feat in 27 innings.
Sri Lanka's Upul Tharanga ranks third with 29 innings, followed by Pakistan's Babar Azam in fourth place with 32 innings, and South Africa's Hashim Amla in fifth with 34 innings.
Malan rose to the occasion, delivering a phenomenal performance by scoring 140 runs off just 107 deliveries, boasting a striking strike rate of 130.84. His blistering knock featured an impressive 21 boundaries, 16 fours, and five sixes, propelling England to a colossal total of 364 runs in their allotted 50 overs.
During this incredible innings, Malan shattered two more individual records in Dharamshala. Firstly, he eclipsed Virat Kohli's nine-year-old record for the highest individual score at the venue. Kohli had previously scored 127 runs against West Indies in 2014. Additionally, when Malan crossed the 113-run mark, he broke Ian Bell's record for the highest individual ODI score by a visiting batter at the same ground.
Notably, this was Malan's fourth ODI century of the year, an achievement that places him in the elite company of English batters who have scored the most ODI centuries in a single year. David Gower achieved this feat in 1983, and Jonny Bairstow replicated it in 2018, with Malan now joining this prestigious list.
It was Malan's 6th ODI hundred and he became the 8th England opener to reach the three-figure mark in the showcase 50-over tournament. It was also the first hundred for England in this year's World Cup in India.
Only two other England batters have scored hundreds in a World Cup in India. Graham Gooch hit 115 against India in Mumbai in 1987 while Andrew Strauss hit 158 against India in Bengaluru in 2011.
Malan got to his hundred in just the 32nd over. He switched to 6th gear after getting to his hundred as he tore into off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz, hitting him for 4, 6, 6, 4 as he raced past 120 in just the 33rd over of the match. Malan got out for 140 off 107 balls in the 38th over to off-spinner Mahedi.
