A group of day labourers staged demonstrations Saturday in front of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office on their demand for withdrawal of the ongoing nonstop transport blockade and hartal enforced by her party-led 20-party alliance, report agencies.
The labourers, under the banner of Trinamool Hawker Samity and Trinamool Dinmajur Samity, gathered in front of the BNP chief's office in Gulshan-2 area around 11:45am. Later, they staged the demonstrations there with spades and baskets for nearly an hour. They shouted various slogans against hartal and blockade and street violence.
Talking to reporters, president of Golkhali Union Awami League Zohirul Haq Mintoo who led the Trinamool Dinmajur Samity during the protest said they are going through a tough time for want of work because of the transport blockade and hartal.
"The blockade and hartal are taking their toll on us. We've come here to register our protest against it," he added. Earlier, a group of students and transport workers also staged similar demonstrations over the same demand in vain. Amena Khatun, one of the demonstrators, said: "We have only one request for Khaleda Zia: please do not call shutdowns."
She adds: "We cannot get work during blockade and shutdowns. We're struggling to run our families."
