Our Correspondent
SIRAJGANJ, Mar 23: Day labourers of the district are passing their days in acute crisis for not getting work to maintain their livelihood.
Many of them are not even able to manage a square meal a day for the members of their families as they do not have any source of income or any job to do.
The period of harvesting Boro paddy is almost over. But the day labourers who went to different districts for harvesting paddy have returned almost empty handed.
The workers of the char areas living on the banks of rivers have no other means for earning livelihood except selling their labour.
This correspondent talked to Abul al-Amin (30), Ali (25) and Salim Uddin (27) of Magurdanga village under Ullapara upzila.
They said they went to Dhaka district three weeks ago for work. Before leaving for Dhaka they had borrowed Tk 700 to 900 each at 10 per cent interest rate per month for maintenance of their families.
They returned fetching about Tk 1000 each. They said the surplus money after repaying the loans would support them for at best seven days. They do not know what would happen next.
