Day-long rain causes hassle to city dwellers
FE REPORT | Monday, 15 September 2025
Heavy rains from morning to late afternoon on Sunday reduced the income of working class people in the capital and office-goers complained of hassle in their commute.
Parts of Jatrabari, Rayerbagh, Ramna, Purana Paltan, Shantinagar, Malibagh, Mogbazar and other areas remained waterlogged causing commuters' sufferings.
"I stepped out of my home to head to the office this morning, only to find the street inundated with water. I waited for transportation for 30 minutes, which made me late at work," Kamal Ahmed, a Jatrabari resident, recounted his morning ordeal while going to his office at Motijheel in the city.
Mominul Islam, a private service holder, shared his experience of going from Dolaipar to Gulistatn via rickshaw with a fare of Tk 180, which is usually between Tk 100 and Tk 120 during normal day.
Meanwhile, the working class people were also hit hard due to rainfalls that curtailed their daily income.
Rickshaw pullers and CNG- auto rickshaw drivers said they did not get the expected amount of passengers due to rain.
"From early morning I couldn't get expected number of passengers due to rains," Robibul Mia, a rickshaw puller told the FE at Kamalapur. Until afternoon, 97 milimetre (mm) rainfall was recorded in the capital, according to Dhaka Met office.
The capital continues to grapple with water logging during the monsoon as different measures taken by the two city corporations have failed to make any substantive contribution to improve the city's drainage system.
