DCC asked to resume demolition of illegal billboards
Tuesday, 23 March 2010
The High Court (HC) Monday asked the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) to resume demolition drive on unauthorised billboards in the capital without any further delay, reports UNB.
Passing the interim order, the HC also asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner to provide forces as per requirement of the DCC and to cooperate in the drive on the removal of unauthorised billboards.
The interim High Court orders came upon a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), a rights watchdog.
HRPB filed the PIL writ following media reports on March 16 that two people were killed and eight others injured when a poorly-mounted hoarding collapsed on them in front of a market at Gulshan-1 during the storm that swept through the capital on March 15 evening.
After hearing the PIL petition, a division bench comprising Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice M Delwar Hossain also issued rules upon the government to explain in three weeks why a direction should not be given to demolish all illegal billboards set up in the capital to save the life of the city dwellers from security risks.
The HC further asked the government to show-cause why direction should not be given to pay compensation for the family members of the two people killed in the billboard crash in Gulshan on March 15.
