DCC election in March : CEC

Monday, 16 November 2009

RAJSHAHI, Nov 15 (BSS): Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda said that election to the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) would be held in March and that to the municipalities in May next year.
"We have to prepare final voters list first before holding any election at present so no election could be arranged before March next", Dr Huda said.
He said these while talking to the awaiting journalists after addressing the inaugural ceremony of a daylong workshop titled "Election Management Development".
Dr Huda said, election to the Union Parishad might be held in September-October. He, however, said no date has yet been finalised or announced but we are doing some projections in this regard.
Bangladesh Election Commission (BEC) organised the workshop under its 'Support to the Electoral Process in Bangladesh Project' at BRAC Centre Sunday.
Chaired by Commissioner of Rajshahi division Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan, the session was also addressed by BEC Additional Secretary and National Project Director Dr Rafiqul Islam and Deputy Election Commissioner Syed Muhammad Musa.
Dr Huda said, steps were taken to hold the UP polls in June-July but the UP Forum office-bearers raised objection terming the June-July as not suitable for holding the local body election.
"We are also considering the matter and we will consult the LGRD Ministry before holding the polls," he added. Referring to the Bhola seat, the CEC said, the verdict of the Supreme Court must be executed and the EC has been taking necessary measures in this regard.
He said, the Parliament Secretariat would first vacate the seat and reelection to the vacated seat would be held within 90 days.
Replying to another query, the CEC said, the Municipality Chairmen who were elected as MP shall not hold the two profitable posts simultaneously and they must leave the MP post. In this regard, he said, the EC had earlier served notice to them but they stayed that upon writ petition and decision would be taken in this regard soon after disposal of the writ.
Addressing the workshop, Dr Huda urged upon all concerned to put in their best and collective efforts to make the elections in future more credible and accepted by all.
EC is not capable of holding any successful election, as it's a collaborative work, he said.
Some 100 officials including administrative, law enforcing agencies, EC, NGOs and journalists from different districts under Rajshahi division attended the workshop to devise ways and means on how to make the national and local body elections successful in future.
