DCC needs to be made more efficient

Friday, 4 December 2009

Of late, earthquake and its vulnerability in the country is in limelight. Many instructions, rather directions, have been given for strengthening the buildings to minimise the risk factors.
But, the poor show of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) in building new establishments does hardly assure the citizens of its efficiency in dealing with disaster arrangement operations.
For example, the newly-built DCC Karwan Bazar kitchen market is on the verge of collapse. The main beam at fish section has already provided with dozens of steel props to hold it right. The floors around the rice selling section is full of deep cracks. The under-construction DCC market, adjacent to Ramna thana, had been trimmed several times during caretaker government. The Waqf Bhaban at New Eskaton has been built on the footpath by blocking the easy movement of the passers-by.
In the face of such facts, how can we expect the DCC to protect sky scrappers from any possible disaster? Rangs Bhaban, to cite here an example, took months to be demolished, costing dozens of lives. That was the case during the period of 'self-proclaimed' efficient persons of the last caretaker government.
