DCC polls in Oct-Nov: EC

Thursday, 16 April 2009

Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) election is likely to be held in October-November as the city corporation laws are expected to be passed by parliament in July, reports UNB.
Although the Election Commission (EC) is prepared to hold the overdue DCC polls, but it cannot go ahead for want of the necessary laws for holding the elections, Election Commissioner M Sakhawat Hossain said Wednesday.
"If the parliament sits in June and then passes the city corporation laws, the Commission will have to hold the DCC polls in October-November as there will be rainy weather during August and September in the country," Sakhawat told reporters at his office.
He said the Commission had been waiting for the city corporation laws to hold the DCC polls. "We have preparations for DCC elections, but how we can hold the polls if there are no laws."
Sakhawat observed that the Election Commission must be further strengthened by giving it constitutional powers as well as increasing the manpower and the infrastructure across upazila levels to ensure a matured democratic process in the country.
Referring to Indian democratic culture, he said as the Election Commission and the Judiciary in India were very strong, so the Indian people were bound to abide by the rules. "But the opposite scenario is visible in our country," he said.
