DCC to reclaim children's playgrounds

Saturday, 30 October 2010

Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) plans to carry out a new survey in the city's different areas to know the present status of playgrounds for children as a number of playgrounds are now being grabbed or grabbed by unscrupulous people, DCC officials said, reports BSS.
A surveyor team comprising magistrates would be engaged next week in 10 regions of the capital metropolis to recover those playgrounds from the hands of unscrupulous influential persons. The DCC in its estate list has now 53 playgrounds in the metropolis and out of them 12 are children's parks and six are playgrounds.
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina recently directed the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to recover all the children's parks and playgrounds in the city.
The news agency correspondent visited several children's parks including Narinda Shishu Park, Narinda Shishu Park-2, Khilgaon Shishu Park, Out-fall Staff Quarters Shishu Park and found that DCC has lost its control over those green spaces.
Outfall Staff Quarters Shishu Park is another playground found to be the sanctuary of the drug peddlers and addicts and all trees were chopped down.
Locals at Khilgaon area came down heavily on the non-existence of the playground saying that even seven years ago children for their recreation used the open place.
Professor of Psychology Department of Dhaka University Dr Mehtab Khanom said, "Any conscious person will tell you what I told you. Lack of playgrounds hinders children's mental, social and physical growth".
Mayor of Dhaka Sadek Hossain Khoka said evicting illegal occupants from DCC playgrounds for children is a regular task. "We have taken necessary steps after the directives of the Prime Minister and will conduct a survey to get back playgrounds under DCC," Khoka said.
Chief Estate Officer of DCC Moshiar Rahman said, "I have no idea about the numbers of playgrounds under illegal occupants but so far as I know, those are small in number."
