Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) has hailed government's recent initiative of making the use of jute products compulsory in a number of sectors.
"Lost glory of our golden fibre is expected to be revived by this decision as the domestic demand would increase tremendously," DCCI Secretary AHM Nurul Islam told the FE.
He said the chamber believes that the government's initiative will encourage the usage of environment-friendly jute products and called it a 'wise and timely decision' taken by the present government.
The government has made the use of jute goods compulsory under law in the packaging of cement and other commodities such as rice, wheat, sugar and fertiliser. This move would inspire jute industry to meet the increasing demand for jute packaging in the international market. The higher demand for the jute internationally is attributed to its being environmentally-friendly.
A similar law was passed by India in 1987 to raise the domestic demand of jute that has benefited Indian jute farmers a lot. Bangladesh and India are leading producers of jute, but both the countries have faced a drastic fall in the demand for jute at home and abroad.
