DCCI team to visit Iraq soon

FE Report | Monday, 19 May 2014

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) will send a business delegation to Iraq soon aiming to boost Bangladesh's export there.
There is a vast scope for exporting readymade garment (RMG), pharmaceuticals, ceramic, jute and jute goods to Iraq as the prices of those products are competitive.
DCCI President Mohammad Shahjahan Khan said Iraq is a potential market for Bangladeshi export products. He said a business delegation will fly to Iraq shortly to explore the market there.
"We will finalise the date for the visit after meeting with the Iraqi Ambassador in Dhaka," the DCCI president told the FE Sunday.
Bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Iraq is not up to the mark despite the present excellent relations between the two countries.
Earlier Iraqi Ambassador in Dhaka Shakir Qasim Mahdi said that there is a vast scope for Bangladesh to export its RMG, pharmaceuticals, ceramic, jute and jute goods to his country as the prices of those products are competitive.
He suggested enhancing trade relations with his country for mutual benefits.
He called upon Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to invest in Iraq. He said that the Iraqi government has announced a budget of US$ 130 billion and 40 per cent of it will be utilised to attract foreign investment.
He invited Bangladeshi investment in the ceramic, medicine, leather and information technology (IT) sectors in Iraq.
Bangladesh exported goods worth $ 1,213,238.79 to Iraq during the fiscal year (FY) 2012-13, according to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
"We want to increase our exports to Iraq. Political stability and development of the banking system could help increase our exports there," EPB vice-chairman Shubhashish Bose told the FE.
