Friday, 6 June 2008

A 16-member delegation of the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) left Dhaka recently for Kunming, China to attend the 16th Kunming Import and Export Fair 2008 to be held from June 6 to June 10.

DCCI Vice-president Khandakar Shahidul Islam is leading the delegation, said a press release.

Prior to leaving for China, Mr Khandakar Shahidul Islam said the aim of the fair is to expand the Bangladesh market in China and increase bilateral trade between the two friendly countries.

Import from China was worth US$2571.50 million in 2006-07 whereas export from Bangladesh was worth a meagre $92.99 million, he mentioned.

Therefore, the Bangladesh delegation would try to create a positive image and a favourable market situation for the country, he said.

A separate pavilion has been allotted to the DCCI in the fair. Eight Bangladeshi organisations will display their products in the pavilion.

The products include ceramic items, readymade garments (RMG), jute goods, handicrafts, leather and leather goods, plastic items, Jamdani saris and electronic products.

The DCCI, as the representative of the SMEs, has been continuously in touch with the Chinese private sector with a view to increasing export of Bangladeshi goods to China.
