The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has won the '2007 World Chambers Competition Award' in best skills development programme category.
The award is jointly awarded by World Chambers Federation (WCF), International Chamber of Commerce's (ICC) specialised division for chamber affairs, and Union of Chamber and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB).
The competition was held at Istanbul in Turkey during the 5th World Chambers Congress (WCC) on July 4-6. ICC Chairman Marcus Wallenberg made the announcement of winning Friday.
DCCI President Hossain Khaled received the award on behalf of the Chamber from the ICC chairman. ICC WCF Chair Rona Yircali was also present on the occasion.
DCCI competed with 38 countries from which WCF received 58 applications. DCCI sent the application to ICC on April 12 on DCCI Business Institute (DBI), a centre of entrepreneurial excellence, providing need-based training for development of the local entrepreneurs, business executives and potential entrepreneurs.
The DCCI president in his presentation on the occasion highlighted the need for research for skills development and training. He also emphasised the need for acquiring requisite competence to stay ahead.
The objectives of the DCCI project are to develop entrepreneurial skills for initiating new ventures and self employment, empower people with knowledge and training, help poverty alleviation to achieve the MDG, graduate the SMEs to large scale enterprises and conduct policy research for sustainable development.
Starting from 1991, DCCI organised 466 training programmes and trained almost 12,000 people, about 40 per cent of whom are engaged in suitable positions in various businesses and organisations.
