DCCI's concern over price hike of essentials in post-cyclone period

Tuesday, 20 November 2007

FE Report
The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) expressed its deepest concern over the recent price hike of essential commodities including agricultural products.
It is a grave and common concern for all that the prices are rising at a high rate on a continuous basis, the Chamber stated.
The recent havoc caused by the cyclone SIDR in the coastal districts will further aggravate the situation. Necessary steps should be taken to keep prices of essential commodities and food items within the reach of the common people and stable after the devastation made by the recent cyclone. Close monitoring of the situation and appropriate distribution of agricultural inputs like seeds, fertiliser, pesticides, diesel etc should be done for the farmers and growers on an emergency basis so that loss of harvests can be minimised, the Chamber suggested.
Blaming the business community and making statements against the business community may give rise to confusion, the Chamber said.
"Instead, a united effort of the whole nation is now required to find a way out of the present crucial situation. Instead of playing a blame game we should work in a concerted manner to identify and uproot the bad elements from the society, rectify the system and prevent such activities from continuing", the Chamber further said.
