DCH to be formally automated today

Sunday, 24 May 2009

FE Report
The Dhaka Customs House (DCH), the country's second largest revenue earning centre, will be formally automated today (Sunday).
Finance Minister AMA Muhith is likely to inaugurate the automation at a city hotel. Commerce Minister M Faruk Khan will be present at the function as the special guest.
DCCI president Zafar Osman, whose agency is responsible for implementing the automation project, told the FE: "We have taken all necessary preparations for formal inauguration of the automation Sunday."
Data Soft, a local IT firm, is installing the automation system on behalf of the DCCI at a cost of Tk 22.5 million on build-own-operate-transfer basis.
Under the project, businesses will be able to submit IGM (import general module) and EGM (export general module) through online from their respective offices or houses. They will also be able to view the development of their submissions.
But, bill of entry module will be launched during first week of July, Data Soft officials hinted.
DCCI officials, however, hinted that the new system will help reduce customs procedures to six steps from the existing 31 steps. "The businesses can save both time and money by around 80 per cent after the DCH is automated."
