The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has extended the time limit for obtaining operating licences for captive and standby electricity generators by another two months, official sources said.
"We have extended the timeframe for issuance of licences for the operators of captive power generators by two months until December 31, 2008 in order to facilitate more users to comply with the legal provision," BERC Chairman Golam Rahman said Saturday.
This is fourth time that the energy regulatory body has extended the deadline for obtaining licences for captive/standby generators, having generation capacity above one megawatt (mw).
The third such deadline expired on October 31, the Commission sources said.
"It will be the last chance … there will be no more extensions as we have already given enough time for the purpose," the BERC chairman told the FE.
He further said after the deadline the Commission will take necessary actions, including disconnection of gas supply and imposition of financial penalty, against the users of unlicensed captive/standby power generators.
When asked, Mr. Golam Rahman said nearly 50 per cent of the country's total captive operators are yet to obtain operating licences.
An estimated 1000 captive and standby power generators, having the capacity of 1.0 mw and above, are in use in the country for industrial purpose, he mentioned.
So far, the Commission has received around 500 applications seeking licences, the BERC chief said.
"Of the total, we have issued around 200 licences while the process of issuing 300 more licences are under process," he said.
