Deadline for income tax return filing extended
FE REPORT | Friday, 27 February 2026
The government has extended the deadline for individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns until March 31 following a poor response from taxpayers.
The previous deadline is set to expire on February 28.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a circular on Thursday announcing the extension.
This marks the fourth consecutive extension of the deadline, aimed at helping taxpayers adapt to the mandatory online tax return submission system.
Speaking to the FE, NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan said that around 3.9 million taxpayers had submitted their returns so far.
"I have noticed that many taxpayers are still awaiting submission. Of them, many have already completed registration," he said.
In February alone, the NBR received only 0.3 million tax returns, a poor number attributed to the national election.
Last year, around 4.5 million taxpayers submitted their tax returns.
