Deadly bus collision again
Thursday, 23 October 2014
The tragic bus accident at Natore took away 33 lives. Many more were injured and are now fighting death in hospitals and clinics. Many among the injured will be crippled for life.
Media reports indicated, the collision happened as one of the buses tried to overtake a truck. This is the most common reason for road mishaps in the country's highways.
Bus and lorry drivers are reckless, and always compete with other vehicles on the roads. They are arrogant and illiterate and lack common sense. They are not aware of the consequences of such dangerous competition.
Drivers and helpers of the two ill-fated buses involved in the accident at Natore were not aware of the consequences of reckless driving.
They do not care any one. They misbehave with passengers and do not hesitate to maltreat or physically assault the passengers whoever attempts to protest their reckless driving. If the drivers are not disciplined, such accidents claiming human lives will continue.
What is the remedy then? The immediate remedy is to discipline the drivers. No iron hand or new law is necessary for disciplining them. Simply enforcement of existing law can hold the reckless drivers in check.
The same drivers, when they go abroad with employment appear to be obedient and respectful to laws of those countries. Why they do not do it here then? It is only possible because they go unpunished after committing offences. Punishing the culprits only can save human lives from being lost on the country's highways.
