Deal with IDA signed for preparing two projects

Two grant agreements for a total amount of US$ 1,600,000 were signed between the government and the International Development Association (IDA) here Tuesday for preparing two projects regarding sustainable energy and water-resource management, reports UNB.
Officials said the funds would be used for preparing Clean Air and Sustainable Energy (CASE) and Bangladesh Dhaka En-vironment and Water Resource Management projects.
Secretary of Economic Relations Divisions (ERD) M Aminul Islam Bhuiyan and Country Director of World Bank Xian Zhu signed the deals on behalf of Bangladesh Government and IDA (World Bank's soft-lending window) respectively.
Environment and Forest Ministry will implement the CASE project and Local Government Division will implement the Bangladesh Dhaka Environment and Water Resource Management project.
The proposed amount of the grant for CASE is US$ 900,000 while US$ 700,000 for Bangladesh Dhaka Environment and Water Resource Management projects.
"CASE will strengthen the infrastructure, institutional and regulatory framework for air-quality management in Bangladesh. It will also address emission from major sources such as industry, transport and household fuel," says a release on the accords.
It said the grants would be used for preparation of feasibility studies, detailed designs, environment, social and economic assessments and carrying out stakeholder consultations. The last date for its utilization is June 23, 2008.
The Bangladesh Dhaka Environment and Water Resource project will promote integrated pollution management in the watershed of Greater Dhaka and contribute to pollution reduction and improved environmental conditions in the watershed through a series of preventive and abatement measures in selected industrial pollution hotspots.
