Dealing with tech giants

Thursday, 27 August 2020

The National Board of Revenue is not getting value added tax from Facebook, although the social media platform earned advertisement money in Bangladesh, according to reports. Global players like Facebook and Google are often negotiating with governments of advanced countries on revenue sharing or business practices. Because, there are grey areas where governments and local media players do not know how much the giants earned from advertisements through advertisements.
For countries like Bangladesh, the situation is more challenging in view of the fact that we lack in the area of advanced technology. However, we need to develop capacity to ensure surveillance over cyber activities affecting the country and its people. Unless we attain capacity to compete technologically, we will not be able to protect our rights and interest.
