Dearth of qualified students for DU

Several departments under the Dhaka University (DU) are not getting required number of students as the admission aspirants couldn't fulfil the mandatory terms and conditions.
The university sources said major departments including English, Law, Information Science and Library Management, Sociology and Political Science have failed to fill-up their available seats.
DU Arts Faculty Dean Prof Sadrul Amin told FE that the university is unable to fillup its available seats for the academic session 2013-2014.
"More than 40,000 students appeared for the admission test under the 'Kha Unit' this year, of which only around 8,000 students cleared the test the faculty dean said.
He noted that the number of empty seats is alarming in some departments, namely the Department of Information Science and Library Management, Political Science and English.
The dean, however, didn't mention the specific number of empty seats under these departments saying that they would publish the figure soon.
"Although, the number of GPA (grade point average)-5 holding students have been crossing records every year, but the acquired quality is questionable", he added.
He, however, criticised some departments for their unrealistic conditions for the admission and urged to relax their existing conditions in line with the level of the student's quality.
DU authorities have put new conditions including 200 marks English and Bangla study under the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) level examinations.
When contacted with the University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof AK Azad Chowdhury expressed serious concern and said he will discuss the issue with the Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique.
"How the departments will allow the students' admission? while they don't fulfill their required conditions", the university's regulator said adding that students should be improved the quality.
