Death anniversary of Major Gani today

The 54th death anniversary of Major M A Gani will be observed today (Friday) in a befitting manner, reports BSS. Different organisations including Major Gani Parishad have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the death anniversary of the former army officer turned politician. These programmes included placing of wreaths at the grave of Gani in Comilla cantonment and offering munajat seeking divine blessings for the departed soul. Major Gani the founder of East Bengal Regiment and a member of Provincial Legislative Assembly, died in 1957 as he suffered severe heart attack during his visit to Germany. He was born in a reputed Muslim family of Nagaish village under Brahminpara Upazila of Comilla district on December 1 in 1915 and joined pioneer corps of British-Indian Army as a commissioned officer in 1941. He resigned from army in 1953 and joined the country's politics. He was elected as a member of provincial legislative assembly from Burichang in Comilla in 1954 election.
