Death anniversary of Saifur Rahman observed

The sixth death anniversary of M Saifur Rahman, Bangladesh’s longest-serving finance minister, was observed with various programmes in Dhaka and Moulvibazar on Friday. Leaders and activists of Moulvibazar district unit of BNP placed wreaths at the grave of the former BNP standing committee member at Baharmardan village in Sadar Upazila in the morning. They also offered fateha there and prayed for salvation of his departed soul. The district unit BNP arranged a milad and discussion in the afternoon. Sylhet BNP organised a milad mahfil at Sylhet central mosque after Juma prayers. Besides, a discussion was held at the National Press Club in Dhaka. Durre Samad Rahman and Saifur Rahman Foundation arranged the discussion in memory of the late minister. At the programme, the speakers recalled the role of Saifur Rahman in establishing the discipline in the financial sector of Bangladesh. Former Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda was present as the chief guest at the programme with the foundation chairman and Saifur’s son, M Naser Rahman, in the chair. Meanwhile, BNP will arrange a doa mahfil at its Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka after Asr prayers on Saturday on the occasion seeking salvation of Saifur’s departed soul. On September 5, 2009, Saifur Rahman died in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at the age of 77. A chartered accountant-turned politician, Saifur Rahman was elected to the Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) for four times, according to a news agency.
