Death penalty no panacea
Sunday, 18 October 2020
Respecting the demands and expectations of different groups of people, the government has approved death penalty as the highest punishment for rape. Now it is necessary to implement the law judiciously and complete the legal process properly and in time. Caution needs to be exercised to prevent sabotage or miscarriage of justice.
However, crimes like rape cannot be eradicated only by applying death penalty. Women as victims and witness to such crimes need to be protected from further violence and social stigma. If criminals know that they cannot go unpunished, the frequency of such crimes will automatically come down. At the same time, the youths need also to be taught family values and religious lessons so that they grow up as responsible citizens. If there is no culture of impunity in society, perpetrators would not be emboldened to commit such crimes.
