Death-row convict arrested after 17 yrs

FE REPORT | Saturday, 6 August 2022

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Friday arrested a man from Shaheenbagh at Savar in Dhaka in connection with killing of his wife and minor daughter nearly 17 years back.
The arrestee identified as Jakir Hossain allegedly strangled his wife, Nipa Akter, and three-year-old daughter on February 26, 2005 over dowry dispute and family quarrel.
Commander of RAB-4 DIG Mozammel Haque disclosed it at a press conference held at the elite force's media centre in city's Karwan Bazar area.
Jakir was arrested after Nipa's parents filed a case in this regard on February 27, 2005. But he got bail from the court and went into hiding.
A lower court sentenced him to death for killing his wife and daughter.
The RAB official said Jakir got married again in 2013 and lived in Fakirapool, Arambagh, Khilgaon and Hazaribagh areas in the capital and Chattogram. He also frequently changed his profession to avoid arrest.
After failing to get more dowries from Nipa's family, Jakir first strangled his wife and later his daughter, he said, adding that Jakir married Nipa, daughter of Abu Hanif of Jionpur village under Daulatpur upazila of Manikganj district, in 2000.
He received gold ornaments, furniture and cash as dowry during his marriage. Even after getting those things, Jakir tortured his wife mentally and physically for getting more dowries.
