Death toll from floods shoots up to 702

The steadily growing death toll from the flood-related incidents like drowning, waterborne diseases and snakebites etc rose to 702 with 10 fresh deaths reported in the last 24-hours until Sunday morning, reports UNB.
Meanwhile, the flood situation has improved greatly with all but two rivers flowing below their danger marks and floodwater receding from most of the affected areas.
However, a new report said, a latest spell of flood has hit Rajshahi area due to rain and onrush of water from upstream of the Ganges (Padma).
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, in its Sunday bulletin said, the Ganges (Padma) was still flowing above the danger level at several points.
The river recorded fall by 6-cm at Rajshahi, 2-cm at Hardinge Bridge, 4-cm at Goalondo, 5-cm at Bhagyakul and 4-cm at Pankha. But it was still flowing at Pankha above danger level by 11-cm, by 21-cm at Goalundo and 12-cm at Bhagyakul Sunday morning.
The Kobadak at Jhikargacha observed fall by 2-cm, and was flowing above the danger level by 39-cm the same morning.
Some 22,85,277 people of 39 districts have been affected by the flood, which started rolling in on July 30, and engulfed most part of the country.
According to the statistics, provided by the Food and Disaster Management Ministry, the flood has damaged some 9,84,161 houses completely or partially, crops on 1,536,017 acres completely or partially, while some 28,412-km roads were damaged completely or partially, and 8,040 educational institutions were damaged completely or partially.
The flood onslaughts also damaged 889-km of embankments completely or partially, while some 1,770 bridges and culverts were damaged completely or partially during the ongoing calamity.
Meanwhile, relief supplies in terms of cash and goods from the Chief Adviser's relief fund continued for the flood-hit people.
