Deaths at construction sites
Monday, 17 November 2014
Very often we read in newspapers that a construction worker is either dead or is about to die from accidents occurring entirely due to violation or non-compliance of safety rules. It is indeed very tragic. The loss of life could have been easily averted if some precautions were taken and basic safety measures maintained strictly. The construction companies cannot evade their responsibility and must be made to pay adequate compensation to the families of the dead and injured workers.
Many companies do not even encourage the workers to use safety gears while working. In such cases, a financial penalty should be imposed to caution them of the consequences of negligence in safety matters. This will definitely cut down the number of such accidents.
Violation of Bangladesh national building code is very frequent and the government must take action against it so that the construction sites are safe for the workers who are involved with this risky job. Around a hundred workers have been killed in the first six-months of this year. When a person dies with him the dream of a family is shattered and its members face uncertainty. Many workers admit that they are scared to work in such risky conditions, but they really have very little choice.
