Thursday, 15 November 2007

Debapriya Bhattacharya, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and United Nations Offices in Geneva, presented his credentials to the WTO Director General Pascal Lamy at his office Tuesday, reports UNB.
During the meeting, Debapriya apprised the WTO Director General about the current concerns of Bangladesh relating to marginalisation of the interest of the least developed countries (LDCs) in the Doha Development Round.
He laid emphasis on the need to have commercially meaningful duty-free quota-free market access for LDC exports, operationalisation of LDC modalities for movement of natural persons, ensure food security and protection of special products during agricultural liberalisation.
The need to have more high quality trade-related foreign aid to alleviate production bottlenecks also came up for discussion.
Lamy appreciated the views of the new Permanent Representative and urged him to contribute towards successful conclusion of the on-going trade negotiations.
Earlier, Debapriya presented his credentials to the Director General of UN Offices in Geneva Sergei Ordzhonikidze.
During the meeting after presentation ceremony, Debapriya briefed Ordzhonikidze about reform initiatives undertaken by Bangladesh government aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, improving economic governance and establishing rule of law in the country.
Ordzhonikidze recalled the important and substantive role played by Bangladesh in the UN system.
He also expressed his strong desire to work constructively with the new Bangladesh envoy.
